Provincial
Government sets 2001 Rent Increase Guideline
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has announced that the rent increase
guideline for 2001 will be 2.9 percent.
The
new rent increase guideline becomes effective January 1, 2001 and establishes
the amount that Ontario's landlords can increase the rent for current tenants
without applying to the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. Under the Tenant Protection
Act, a landlord can increase a current tenant's rent once per year by the rent
increase guideline.
The rent increase guideline takes into account the overall costs of running an apartment
building including maintenance, hydro, heating costs and taxes.
The rent increase for 2000 is 2.6 percent.
